Apply for a Canadian Student Visa

Canada has one of the best and most respected education systems in the world. Thousands of students from other countries pursue their educational goals in Canada. Studying in Canada offers great advantages. The foreign students gain valuable Canadian work experience during and after studies is completed successfully. Canada offers permanent immigration opportunities for international students who have graduated from post-secondary programs in Canada.

Requirements

You must have a study permit if your course of study is greater than 6 months. To apply for a study permit, you must

  • provide a letter of acceptance from a recognized Canadian school, college or university. Conditional letter of acceptance is also acceptable.
  • provide evidence of enough funds to live and study in Canada.
  • satisfy the immigration officials that you will leave Canada before the expiry of authorized stay.

If you have a valid study permit, you may be able to work on your school’s campus without a work permit for up to 20 hours per week during regular academic sessions and full time during scheduled breaks.

Since distance learning does not require the student to be in Canada, a study permit cannot be issued for this type of course.

Work permits for spouses of students

The spouses or common-law partners of full-time international student with a valid study permit can apply for an open work permit in Canada

Post-Graduation Work Permit Program

The Post-Graduation Work Permit Program allows students who have graduated from a participating Canadian post-secondary institution to gain valuable Canadian work experience. A work permit under the program cannot be valid for a longer period than the length of the student’s studies. After successful completion of their studies, students may accept employment in any field, with no restrictions. This means that students are allowed to apply for the work permit as soon as they graduate. There is no need for ESDC OR LMIA confirmation. The work permit may be valid up to a maximum of three years with no geographical restriction.

Canadian Experience Class

The Canadian Experience Class makes it easier and more convenient for international students to apply for permanent resident status in Canada. If you have graduated from a post-secondary program at an eligible institution in Canada, and you have at least one year of work experience in Canada in a managerial, professional, technical or trade occupation after graduation, you may be eligible to apply for permanent residence in Canada.
